Lines of force are imaginary curves in an electric field, such that its tangent at any point is parallel to the electric field vector.
Electric lines of force indicate the direction in which a positive test charge would move if it were placed in an electric field.

Properties:

Direction is given by the direction in which a (positive) test charge 



moves.The tangent to a field line at any point gives the direction of E
They never intersect each other


Field lines start on positive charges and end on negative charges
Density of lines indicates strength of E.
Electric lines of force are perpendicular to the surface of a positively or negatively charged body.
Electric lines of force can pass through an insulator 

        


Electric lines of force do not pass through a conductor
